About Us

Barely Afloat is a Cardiff-based Theatre Company formed in 2002.
We aim to produce high quality productions with a focus on:

Accessibility, Opportunity & Versatility

- To cultivate an interest in theatre amongst a wider audience
- To provide audience members with a say in future productions, to encourage a lively, diverse and engaging programme of work
- To provide a vehicle for launching the careers of emerging theatre practitioners
- To support new writing
- To strive for our productions, website and literature to be accessible for all
- To have fun!

There are four principal members of our team... and so, in no particular order:

Tom Wakeham

Realising that theatre would be far more fun than getting a real job, Tom trained at Welsh College of Music & Drama After leaving he tried desperately to take a year out but people kept offering him work. (What it is to be popular!) Tom is now the Deputy Technical Stage Manager at The Sherman Theatre Cardiff.

Scott Fitzgerald

Scott is the Artistic Director and occasional window cleaner.
He has produced, written, directed and acted in several of his own productions. He can generally be found spending his afternoons scribbling pieces of sheer genius on the back of cigarette packets in the Hilton's jacuzzi. Most of Scott's pieces are drawn to a finale with the time old Confucianist phrase 'Mind you, I've had some hidings'.

Gawain Nash

Gawain is no stranger to the stage, he has appeared in numerous (2) Gilbert and Sullivan shows with LLandaf Musical Society. Soon afterwards realising that it was not for him to venture into the brightly lit areas of the stage, he chose to specialise in Lighting and Sound, and live in darkness. With a background in TV and film lighting, and theatrical lighting and sound realisation and design, he is currently working as a freelance Lighting and Sound bod.

Alun Cave

Alun graduated from WCMD in 2000. After working for Music Theatre Wales and the Sherman Theatre, Alun started work at St. David's Hall as Stage Technician. He can now be seen there, up tallescopes, operating LX and sound or ocasionally treading the boards in a tuxedo, mainly to hold doors open.
